Women’s Health

In Every Body Physiotherapy we have a keen interest in the area of women’s health. We offer treatments for the wide spectrum of problems that women can experience:

  • bladder and bowel dysfunction
  • vaginal prolapsed
  • chronic pelvic pain

Studies show that up to 60% of women will experience urinary incontinence at some stage in their lives. This can be a disruptive and embarrassing problem. There are different types of urinary incontinence including urge incontinence, stress incontinence or mixed incontinence.

Bowel dysfunction can include faecal and wind incontinence, chronic contispation or urgency.

Physiotherapy treatment for bowel and/ or bladder dysfunction usually involves strengthening and releasing pelvic floor muscles, retraining the bladder and bowel habits and teaching our patients how to void and defecate properly.

Vaginal prolapsed is usually due to weakening of the ligaments around the womb, vaginal walls and back passage causing them to drop lower into the pelvis. Most patients will complain of a feeling of “something coming down” or a dragging sensation in the pelvis.

It may be caused by chronic constipation, heavy lifting or childbirth and it can be very distressing for some women. Some people may have a symptomatic prolapsed without any reason.

Physiotherapy can help improve the symptoms of prolapse by improving pelvic floor muscle function, advising on lifestyle changes and defecating technique.
